Overview

Responsible for league/tournament/sports camp management including but not limited to scheduling, team formation, marketing and promotion of leagues/tournament and seasons as well as assisting in sponsored events. Responsible for maximizing revenue through facility utilization, sponsorships and all other potential opportunities. Actively participates in all Sports Tourism initiatives. Overall responsibility for operating budget.

Responsibilities

  • Develop local youth sports relationships to maximize Fieldhouse utilization
  • Attract and operate youth and adult sports leagues, tournaments, camps and clinics
  • Work closely with the Iowa City/Coralville Area CVB to attract groups, activities, events and work jointly on bids
  • In conjunction with the CVB, attend 2-4 national sports tourism tradeshows on behalf of Iowa River Landing Arena/Fieldhouse and the Iowa City/Coralville region
  • Maintain awareness of other venues in the market/region that host similar activities with the goal of attracting additional leagues, tournaments, camps and clinics to the Fieldhouse
  • Knowledge in multiple sports/interests for future expansion and development of leagues
  • Fiscal Responsibility for operating budget including management of all revenue and expense line items
  • Develop long-term capital plan
  • Oversee full-time, part-time staff & interns
  • Knowledge of facility operations to include all leagues, camps, clinics, tournaments etc. being offered
  • Provide knowledgeable guest service to guests and stakeholders
  • Maintain, repair, upgrade, and order equipment when necessary
  • Knowledgeable in facility operations and ability to perform each aspect efficiently
  • Recognize the target area and advise target area
  • Maintain awareness of guests, community, trends, and facility offerings
  • Ability to adapt to guest needs/desires
  • Understand and carryout league/tournament/camp policies and procedures
  • Update website to remain current to leagues and facility needs/trends
  • Ability to open/close facility on a daily basis
  • Knowledge of proper money handling procedures and execution of said procedures
  • Ability to think quickly and rationally in times of emergency to prevent further problems
  • Work weekends, holidays, and nights when necessary
  • Ability to be firm in company policies and procedures
  • Record all incidents encountered
  • Daily rounds during league play as MOD to ensure a safe facility
  • Inventory of items purchased
  • Follow up with guests to learn how the product can be improved
  • Complete special projects and daily assignments as directed by Iowa River Landing General Manager

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or better from an accredited college or university in Business/Hospitality Management or related field.
  • Minimum of three-five (3-5) years management experience in a fieldhouse environment
  • Requires good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to maintain focus in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work well in a group setting
  • Must be observant and detail oriented
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in an emergency situation
  • Must be able to work irregular shifts to include, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

Intellectual/Social demands:

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. Employees in this role will constantly be in leadership role; this requires directing others either verbally or in writing to complete tasks in prescribed time frame. This position also requires constant use of interpersonal skills including: ability to direct/motivate/inform staff and foster collaboration, being able to recognize and resolve conflicts, being able to openly communicate in writing and verbally with clients.

Physical demands:

  • While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee constantly operates a computer and other office devices such telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc; occasionally moves about inside the office to access storage areas, cabinets and office machinery; constantly moves about the Fieldhouse, Arena and event sites before, during and after events to service clients and supervise staff; constantly communicates via telephone, email and in-person with others to exchange accurate information. Pushing/pulling a 100+ lbs. of equipment for long periods

Work environment:

  • The duties of this position are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors in the weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environments is usually moderate to loud during events and minimal during non-even times.
