This is a marketing internship that will assist the Marketing Manager in completing tasks necessary for all events at the Virginia State University Multi-Purpose Center. The intern will have responsibilities that including working special events, developing and implementing grassroots initiatives, and maintaining venue’s social media accounts.


  • Understand how to conduct marketing research through phone calls, emailing, searching the internet, and conducting meetings with various individuals within the market.
  • Assist in developing and implementing event marketing plans and promotions.
  • Participate in grassroots marketing, including distribution of flyers, hanging posters, and creating relationships with various retailers to promote events.
  • Attend meetings which include brainstorming sessions and explain how to execute public relations event ideas
  • Work with Manager to learn how to create and deliver media drops.
  • Assist department in gathering press clippings
  • Draft and circulate Press Releases, Media Advisories, and any necessary trade agreement forms.
  • Update community Calendar of Events with detailed information on each show.
  • Maintain Social Networking Sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc).
  • Interact with building staff, Athletics, and campus employees when working with various projects.
  • Assist marketing department with daily office tasks.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


  • Put forth 20 paid hours per week. Interns can work additional hours for educational benefits.
  • Must be able to receive credit for the internship.
  • Junior undergraduate standing or above.
  • A desire to be in the entertainment/sports industry.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Photoshop.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Work a variety of nightly events including concerts, family shows, basketball games, trade shows, and other events.
  • Must be assertive, outgoing, creative, hard-working, resourceful, independent thinker who is greatly interested in working in Sports/Entertainment Marketing.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment


HOURS: Flexible hours based upon event schedule/needs; however optimal experience requires approximately 20 hours availability per week.
