Under direction from the Director of Operations, the Maintenance Manager or a Maintenance Technician, the Maintenance Laborer (Electrician Helper) assists the Center’s Electrician with installing and maintaining electrical/power systems and will assist the Maintenance Technicians on various maintenance related tasks. In the absence of the Maintenance Manager or the Maintenance Technician (Electrician), the Maintenance Laborer (Electrician Helper) may receive instruction from other Maintenance Technicians or the Director of Operations.


  • Repair, install, replace and test electrical circuits, equipment and appliances using necessary hand tools and testing instruments under electrician’s supervision.
  • Isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment, using suitable testing instruments under electricians supervision
  • Examine and test elements of electrical systems to locate obvious faults, such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn motor brushes under electricians supervision
  • Replace faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures and appliances under electrician’s supervision
  • Replace bulbs and/or ballast in all electrical light systems
  • Replace defective equipment parts such as gears, bushings and bearings and other related electrical parts
  • Repair motors, transformers, generators, and electronic controllers on equipment
  • Report discrepancies or concerns with work assignments as necessary to the Maintenance Technician (Electrician) or the Maintenance Manager
  • As required, estimate materials needed and record time and materials expended on each work orders.
  • Operate equipment used in the maintenance of conventions facilities such as scissor lifts, boom lift and other maintenance equipment.
  • Assist in installing, maintaining, and repairing pipes, valves, faucets, sinks, and other plumbing facilities; repair and maintenance of the facility to include chairs, tables, doors, windows and other articles and fixtures
  • Operate software based tasks controlling the HVAC equipment and lighting controls for the center
  • Assist in the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC equipment; repair and maintenance of various other tools and equipment
  • Assist with maintenance tasks such as drywall, mixing and matching paint, stains, and painting
  • Assist in the completion of preventative maintenance tasks on assigned equipment in the maintenance department
  • Clean and organize work sites as directed
  • Perform other duties as required 


Knowledge of:

  • Basic Electrical principles, NFPA70, National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Facility Maintenance Techniques
  • OSHA regulations and applicable safety rules and procedures
  • Customer Service practices
  • Windows Operating systems and Microsoft Office applications

Ability to:

  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of the facility and equipment
  • Work from general instructions and specifications, with minimal supervision
  • Read and interpret blue prints, specifications, shop drawings, schematic manufacturers specifications and other reference materials to determine appropriate job requirements and procedures
  • Operate a wide variety of equipment used in the maintenance of the facility such as conduit benders, screwdrivers, pliers, knives, wire strippers, saws, drills, torches, sanders, cutters, grinders and other maintenance equipment
  • Thread conduit ends and connect couplings and conduit fittings using wrench
  • Drive utility carts, pick-up trucks, forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, floor scrubbers, and other equipment as required
  • Grasp, hold, bend and twist a wide range of tools, equipment and materials
  • Climb ladders, scaffolding, stairs and lift 50 lbs. unaided
  • Identify colored wiring by sight
  • Work effectively in a service oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in the English language, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and facility users
  • Work in a team-oriented maintenance department where daily work activities will include both tasks within and outside of specific trade disciplines
  • Work a flexible schedule including early mornings, days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays, extended (long) work days and extended numbers of consecutive days




  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Minimum of one (1) year of practical experience in the electrical field and general facility maintenance

Education / Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED
  • Vocational training in the electrical field

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a current CPR certificate
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Virginia driver’s license
