  • Overview

    Utilizing initiative and independent judgment, the Director of Operations works closely with the General Manager in planning, directing and managing the day-to-day operations of the facility including but not limited to operations, housekeeping, maintenance, equipment safety and capital projects. The position will also direct and lead the Operations Department, including management, supervision and coordination of the maintenance and operations of staffing, buildings, equipment and grounds. The position will include direct management of the Mullins Center, Mullins Center Community Ice Rink, and Champions Center (MBB/WBB Practice Facility). In addition, the position will assist where needed with parking operations at McGuirk Stadium for University of Massachusetts Home Football Games.

    Supervision is exercised over professional staff that directs various sections in day-to-day operations. Responsibility further includes evaluation and development of recommendations to improve organizational administration, capital projects, FF & E, procedures, policies, and programs.


    • Assist the General Manager in planning, directing and managing the day-to-day operations of the facility including operations, housekeeping, maintenance and equipment safety
    • Assist the General Manager in the development and administration of the facility’s operating and capital budgets; work directly with the department managers in developing departmental operating budgets
    • Direct and implement all event logistics
    • Recruit, select, lead, motivate and evaluate manager level staff; provide or coordinate training as needed; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures
    • Work directly with clients in preparation of cost estimates, contract negotiation, oversight of event coordination, event settlement.
    • Address and recommend actions on all operation department personnel matters
    • Work with the departmental managers in the day-to-day management of their various departmental disciplines; review and evaluate processes and results; identify and resolve deficiencies and challenges
    • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
    • Develop and implements programs, policies, and procedures for the facility
    • Develop or directs the development and preparation of comprehensive management reports and manuals (i.e. Operations Manual, Annual Preventative Maintenance Plan, Annual Facility Report, Fire Code Rules & Regulations, etc…)
    • Participate and lead various interdepartmental project groups, special projects, and task forces
    • Conduct a variety of organizational studies, investigations, and operational studies; recommend modifications to programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, facility stakeholders and facility users
    • Assume management responsibility for all services and activities involved in the maintenance and operations of assigned facility including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing equipment, custodial services, and grounds keeping.
    • Select, train, motivate and evaluate supervisory staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.
    • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for facility maintenance and operations; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
    • Participate in the development and administration of the Operation budget; forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments as necessary.
    • Oversee the set-up of events; coordinate facility arrangements with concessionaires; direct and monitor the work of contractors, engineers, and architects on building projects.
    • Order supplies and materials for maintenance programs within budget guidelines; receive and maintain supplies.
    • Maintain hazardous materials communication program, and material safety data sheets; maintain knowledge of changes in pertinent Federal, State and Local regulations.
    • Interface with trade union employees and union officials as required.
    • Assist in overseeing parking operations at McGuirk Stadium for University of Massachusetts Home Football Games
    • Perform other duties as assigned.



    • 2 to 3 years’ experience in professional public assembly facility operations management
    • Direct supervisory experience
    • Bachelor’s Degree or better from an accredited college or university in public assembly facility management, hospitality management, business administration or a related field (Other combinations of experience and education that meet these requirements may be substituted)
    • Experience employing modern management methods, long range planning, principles of budgeting, and leadership skills
    • Working knowledge of equipment safety, facility maintenance and housekeeping
    • Experience in contract development and negotiations as it relates to service agreements
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Familiarity with EEOC, FLSA, OSHA, ADA and other employment regulations
    • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
