  • Overview

    Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia is a 9,100-seat multi-purpose arena located on the campus of Old Dominion University. Operated by Spectra Venue Management since it opened in 2002, the Constant Center is known as one of the premier mid-sized collegiate venues in the country. The Constant Center is the cornerstone of the University Village project, a 75-acre development that also features restaurants, shopping, offices, research labs and residences with high-tech connections to the campus. The Ted Constant Convocation Center is home to the Old Dominion Monarch Men's and Women's basketball, and plays host to ODU Wrestling matches, a variety of family-oriented events as well as concerts, ODU commencement, career fairs, and lectures.

    Responsibilities

    • Responsible for planning, coordinating, and facilitating the logistics of all Multi-Purpose Room events (trade shows, banquets, meetings.) Act as main contact for all Multi-Purpose Room events.
    • Coordinate service needs with Aramark (food and beverage provider)
    • Assist Director of Events with planning and preparation for arena events.
    • Advance and communicate all assigned event information to appropriate departments and key personnel.
    • Assist in hiring, training, scheduling and managing of part-time event staff.
    • Assist in Arena and Multi-Purpose Room changeovers when necessary.
    • Manage event support staff (stand-by, fire panel) during events when needed.
    • Supervise event staff coordinator and part-time staff. Also oversee customer service and crowd control.
    • Schedule and run reports on eTime for event and parking staff for payroll.
    • Prepare event staffing and information sheets.
    • Oversee the Great Experiences Rewards and Recognition program.
    • Assist with the day to day operations of the building.
    • Responsibilities will include ODU Football at Foreman Field.
    • Organize and maintain AV equipment for the Multi-Purpose Room.
    • Oversee opening or closing of Arena for a move-in or move-out.
    • Build and maintain tenant relations.
    • Assist in the purchasing of event equipment.
    • Act as Manager On Duty (MOD) during events as assigned.
    • Receives and responds to complaints and feedback from tenants and general public
    • Communicates in a timely fashion any/all problems and proposed solutions to the AGM and/or Director of Events
    • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external clients

    Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in sports management or related field from an accredited college/university.
    • Must have experience with event planning and logistics in a similar work environment, including experience with direct employee supervision.
    • Excellent customer service skills as well as proven leadership and organizational skills.
    • Ability to function in a multi-tasking environment.
    • Strong written and oral communication is vital.
    • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays as required based on event calendar/ as required.
    • Self-motivated with excellent interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to function and make management decision in a fast pace high pressure environment
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including long nights, early mornings, weekends and holidays as needed.
    • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office programs; experience with AutoCAD preferred

    Intellectual/Social demands:

    • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. Employees in this role will constantly be in leadership role; this requires directing others either verbally or in writing to complete tasks in prescribed time frame. This position also requires constant use of interpersonal skills including: ability to direct/motivate/inform staff and foster collaboration, being able to recognize and resolve conflicts, being able to openly communicate in writing and verbally with clients.

    Physical demands:

    • While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee constantly operates a computer and other office devices such telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc; occasionally moves about inside the office to access storage areas, cabinets and office machinery; constantly moves about the arena and event sites before, during and after events to service clients and supervise staff; constantly communicates via telephone, email and in-person with others to exchange accurate information.

    Work environment:

    • The duties of this position are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors in the weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environments is usually moderate to loud during events and minimal during non-even times
