  • Overview

    Utilizing independent judgment, the Director of Operations manages, supervises and coordinates the day-to­ day operations of the venue, including engineering, maintenance, set-up/changeovers, custodial/housekeeping, grounds keeping. Provides overall administrative planning, direction, and policies to operating managers, assuring the highest quality service program to assure booking/rebooking of events.  Ensures an effective and cost-efficient program by controlling departmental operating budget. Provides highly responsible staff assistance to the General Manager.

     

     

    The Multi-Purpose Events Center complex is comprised of four facilities. The 7,380 seat Kay Yeager Coliseum and 57,141 sq. ft. Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall are located adjacent to each other with beautiful outdoor space on the Wichita River. The 50,000 sq. ft. J.S. Bridwell Agricultural Center is located across our pedestrian bridge of the complex. The 2700 seat Memorial Auditorium is located just three blocks away. MPEC offers 1,100 free parking spaces for the Coliseum and Exhibit Hall plus 900 free parking spaces for the Agricultural Center. MPEC also has on-site RV sites for use by facility groups. To make your experience at MPEC complete, we offer an in-house full service catering department for any of the facilities.

    Responsibilities

    • Oversees overall daily operation and maintenance of the arena and all systems. This includes HVAC, sound, lighting, ice making, fire protection, life safety, workplace safety, communications, scoreboard, etc.
    • Oversees the advancing and communicating event information to the appropriate departments and sta ff .
    • Oversees Custodial services for entire facility.
    • Negotiates and administers labor group contracts (Stagehands}.
    • Ultimately responsible for installation and maintenance of ice surfaces.
    • Oversees the operation of event set-up and tear-down, i.e. basketball floor, stage risers, chairs, signs, hockey glass, and dasher boards, etc.
    • Administers and negotiates contracts with outside vendors including pest control, scoreboard systems, seasonal landscaping and snow removal.
    • Acts as liaison with City Services for numerous facility related functions (City Codes, Parking, Licenses, permits, etc.).
    • Oversees Event Service Staff; hiring, training, supervision
    • Responsible for Health & Safety compliance.
    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's/Technical degree from an accredited college/university/school required.
    • Minimum of five (5) years experience in facility operations management.
    • Must show demonstrated knowledge of physical plant management, supervisory skills and experience in work crew supervision in facility operations.
    • Ability to work event nights, weekends and holidays as required.
    • Knowledge of budget preparation and control.
    • Knowledge of OSHA requirements.
    • Knowledge of boilers, chillers, refrigeration and ice making
    • Knowledge of Fire Alarm/ Fire Protection systems
    • Knowledge of Burglar/ Hold up Alarm systems

    Intellectual/Social demands:

    • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. Employees in this role will constantly be in leadership role; this requires directing others either verbally or in writing to complete tasks in prescribed time frame. This position also requires constant use of interpersonal skills including: ability to direct/motivate/inform staff and foster collaboration, being able to recognize and resolve conflicts, being able to openly communicate in writing and verbally with clients.

     

    Physical demands:

    • While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee constantly operates a computer and other office devices such telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc; occasionally moves about inside the office to access storage areas, cabinets and office machinery; constantly moves about the arena and event sites before, during and after events to service clients and supervise staff; constantly communicates via telephone, email and in-person  with others to  exchange accurate information.

     

    Work environment:

    • The duties of this position are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors in the weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environments is usually moderate to loud during events and minimal during non-even times.
