    The Lead Catering Server provides direction and supervision to hourly event staff at catered events as directed by the Catering Managers. Responsible for serving guests in the venue dining areas at catered functions. Must be personable, professional and able to work in an ever-changing fast-paced environment. This role requires that the employee maintain excellent attendance and be available to work a varied event-driven schedule including evenings and weekends.  

     

    This position is based at the Iowa Events Center. The Iowa Events Center features a variety of flexible spaces to host events of all types and sizes. The Iowa Events Center is a unique combination of three venues under one roof: Wells Fargo Arena, Hy-Vee Hall, and Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. The complex is flexible to meet the needs of events of all types and sizes. It is well-suited for conventions, meetings, tradeshows, sporting, social and entertainment events from 10,000–17,100 people.

    Responsibilities

    • Provides direction and supervision to hourly event staff, as directed by Catering Manager, following a written Banquet Event Order (BEO) and event timeline. Responsible for overseeing effective execution of events.
    • Ability to coach and counsel other catering employees on standard operating procedures & best practices.
    • Ensures staff are briefed on event requirements at each shift and assigned to a specific area prior to events.
    • Answers questions of catering staff and providing direction based on ability to comprehend BEOs.
    • Conducts a walkthrough of rooms and storage areas after teardown & completion of event to ensure all areas are clean and organized.
    • Monitors food & beverage quality, guest service and ensures highest level of guest service during event.
    • Demonstrates ability to meet the company standard for excellent attendance, well-groomed with a professional appearance, and adhere to uniform standards.
    • Responsible for setting up banquet functions including linens, dishware, glassware and flatware and requested table top items.
    • Responsible for serving guests and replenishing food for buffet service.
    • Ensures all policies and procedures regarding accounting and cash handling practices are followed.
    • Responsible for overseeing the service of alcoholic beverages to guests. Ensures staff members are checking ID’s to verify minimum age, are serving beverages responsibly in accordance with state/federal regulations.
    • Enforces all Spectra Food Service and Hospitality and venue policies and procedures as they relate to guest satisfaction, quality standards, uniform policy, operating procedures and quality presentation.
    • All other duties as assigned by the Catering Manager, AGM of Catering or Food & Beverage Director.

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
    • Banquet serving experience or other related serving experience in a fine dining or professional service industry.

    • One or more years’ food service / catering management or related supervisory experience preferred.

    • Basic computer proficiency with typing and email. Experience with MS Word, Excel & Outlook preferred.

    • Cash handling experience with basic math skills including significant number manipulation.

    • Effective reading, comprehension, verbal and written skills in English Language.

    • Ability to pay close attention to detail, monitor behaviors of guests, have positive interpersonal relations.

    • Ability to communicate with employees, co-workers, guests, managers and business contacts in a courteous and professional manner.

    • Ability to be self-directed with little oversight and direct a team,

    • Requires creating and sustaining a positive, teamwork oriented employee climate.

    • Ability to work a varied part time schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and long hours.

    Intellectual/Social demands:

    • While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently communicating with employees, co-workers, guests management staff in a clear, business like and respectful manner. Required to constantly multi-task between two or more tasks and prioritize between these tasks while working under time limits in moderate to high pressure situations. This position requires constant attention to details following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. Position requires frequent ability to work on a task independently and frequently work as a part of a team for a variety of tasks. Ability to learn proper techniques for sanitation when working with or around food. Ability to speak and read in English at an intermediate level. Ability to handle cash with accuracy and responsibly. This includes ability to calculate basic math functions including addition and subtraction, calculations of percentages.

     

    Physical demands:

    • While performing duties of the job, the employee will constantly be required to grasp, fingering manipulation of product, feel, and lift up to six (6) catered meals on a tray, push and pull carts of food product, dishes, glasses and flatware. Frequently requires employee to reach with arms, climb, stoop, kneel to set-up and teardown events and reach supplies. Exposure to hot plates, dishes and beverages. Exposure to wet floors. Vision requires ability to constantly adjust focus to see long distances, peripheral vision and close vision to read instructions. Ability to frequently hear communication of others is a loud event environment. Constant standing, walking and moving about a large event facility is required. Employees lift up to 50 pounds constantly during events and push/pull up to 150 pounds frequently.

     

    Work environment:

     

    • The duties of this position are performed primarily indoors. Exposure to loud environment including frequently communicating with guests in a loud event environment, working around loud food production machinery and working in crowded workspaces and crowded events with 1,000 guests or more with background noise or loud bands. Employees will frequently work on tasks independently or on large or small teams.
